Ketotifen

Uses for ketotifen

Asthma, atopic (prophylaxis)
ketotifen is indicated as an add-on medication in the chronic treatment of mild atopic asthmatic children. Ketotifen is a prophylactic agent to be used on a continuous basis and is not effective in the acute prevention or treatment of acute asthma attacks.

Before taking ketotifen

  • Conditions affecting use, especially:
  • Hypersensitivity to ketotifen or to any other component of the formulations, including Sodium benzoate
  • Other medications, specially antidiabetic agents (oral), alcohol, antihistamines, hypnotics,or sedatives
  • If you are pregnant or are breast-feeding.
PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING
  • FDA pregnancy category C. Adequate and well-controlled studies in humans have not been done.
  • ketotifen may be distributed into human breast milk; women taking ketotifen should not breast feed.
Proper use of ketotifen
  • Ketotifen must be used continuously to be effective.
  • Ketotifen may be taken with or without food.
  • Since drowsiness and, rarely, slight dizziness may occur in the early stages of therapy caution is advised; not driving, using machines, or doing anything else that requires alertness while taking ketotifen.
  • Take ketotifen exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Use the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Ketotifen side effects
Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any continue or become troublesome.

Those indicating need for medical attention:

Incidence less frequent
  • Flu (chills; cough; diarrhea; fever; general feeling of discomfort or illness; headache; joint paine; loss of appetite; muscle aches and pains; sore throat; runny nose; sweating; unusual tiredness or weakness; vomiting)
  • Respiratory infection (cough; fever; sore throat)
Incidence rare
  • Cystitis (bloody or cloudy urine; difficult, burning, or painful urination; frequent urge to urinate)
  • Erythema multiforme (blistering, itching, peeling, or redness of skin; joint pain; muscle pain; unusual tiredness or weakness)
  • Hepatitis (abdominal or stomach pain; chills; clay-colored stools; dark urine; diarrhea; dizziness; fever; headache; loss of appetite; nausea; rash; unpleasant breath odor; unusual tiredness or weakness; vomiting of blood; yellow eyes or skin)
  • Seizures (muscle spasm or jerking of all extremities; sudden loss of consciousness)
Those indicating need for medical attention only if they continue or are bothersome:

Incidence more frequent
  • Weight gain
Incidence less frequent or rare

  • Abdominal pain (stomach or abdomen pain)
  • Central nervous system (CNS) stimulation (excitation; irritability; insomnia; nervousness)- particularly in children
  • Dizziness
  • Dryness of mouth
  • Epistaxis (bloody nose; unexplained nose)
  • Skin rash
  • Sleep disturbance (trouble sleeping)
  • Swelling of eyelids
Ketotifen Dosage Forms

Usual adult and adolescent dose

Asthma, atopic (prophylaxis):
  • Oral, 5 mL (1 mg) twice daily, in the morning and evening.
Usual pediatric dose

Asthma, atopic (prophylaxis):

  • Infants and children 6 months to 3 years of age: Oral, 0.25 mL (50 mcg or 0.05 mg) per kg of body weight twice daily, in the morning and evening.
  • Children older than 3 years of age: See usual adult and adolescent dose.
  • The maximum daily dose of Ketotifen is 20 mg.
  • There is no limitation on ketotifen use in the elderly.

Storage
  • Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing.
  • Keep out of the reach of children.
